What to do with your pool during a heatwave ? Our tips to protect your basin in extreme heat

Summer is finally here… and sometimes so is the heatwave! While we all seek shade and cool, your pool is also suffering from high temperatures. Water evaporation, algae growth, chlorine loss… In extreme heat, a poorly maintained pool can quickly become unusable.

So, how do you protect your pool during a heatwave ? Here are our practical tips to keep your water clear, healthy and pleasant all summer long.

Limit water evaporation

During a heatwave, your pool can lose several centimeters of water each day due to sun exposure, ambient heat and wind.

To reduce this, cover your pool whenever it's not in use with a bubble cover or rolling shutter. You can also install an automatic level regulator to maintain a consistent water level without disrupting the filtration system.

Finally, adding hedges, windbreaks or even simple umbrellas around the pool can help reduce the drying effect of the wind.

WaterTech recommends checking the water level every morning during heatwaves.

Prevent algae growth

When temperatures rise, algae multiply faster.

Clear water can turn green in just a few hours. To prevent this, it’s essential to regularly monitor the pH level, keeping it between 7.2 and 7.4, and maintain sufficient sanitizer levels. Brushing the pool walls and vacuuming the bottom (ideally with a WaterTech pool robot) also helps limit algae growth. Additionally, adding a preventative algaecide can be very useful, especially during heatwaves.

For maximum effectiveness, run filtration for at least 12 hours a day, or even continuously during heat peaks.

Think storage !

A beautiful pool also needs a well-organized space. Keep storage chests for toys, floats, cushions or towels. Choose waterproof, sturdy and easily accessible ones. A disorganized stash often wastes space and ends up getting damaged!

For maintenance products (chlorine tablets, test kits, technical accessories), invest in a closed garden cabinet, discreet, sun-protected (and of course accessible).

Also consider installing racks or shelves vertically, especially if floor space is limited.

Adjust chlorine treatment

With heat, chlorine evaporates faster, reducing water treatment efficiency. It is recommended to test your water every two days and adjust the chlorine dosage if necessary, without exceeding recommended levels. You can also add a stabilizer which protects chlorine from UV rays, enhancing its longevity. For those who want to save time, an automatic dosing system maintains a constant and suitable dosage throughout the day.

Optimize pool filtration

In summer, your filtration system is central to water quality. It is essential to extend its running time to up to 16 hours a day if necessary, to ensure efficient circulation and homogeneous treatment. Also remember to clean skimmers, pump baskets and filters regularly, as they can clog faster during busy use. Additionally, a WaterTech pool vacuum robot helps keep the pool floor clean, even after several swims.

Monitor water temperature

Water that is too warm (above 30°C) encourages evaporation, reduces treatment product effectiveness, and encourages microorganisms. To regulate temperature, create shaded zones above the pool with sails or a pergola. You can also install a solar shower nearby for rinsing bathers before each swim. If you have a heat pump, keep it set to a stable temperature around 26–28°C, ideal for comfort and water quality.
